As crazy as it sounds, I just successfully did the following.

 

mv /usr/portage/profile/package.mask /etc/portage/package.unmask

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -uD world

 

(the accept keywords is really in the make.conf file, just shown as above
for display purposes)

 

Finally have full hardware support for my laptop. I only had a few problems
with dependencies which I manually resolved, and I had to downgrade
module-init-tools as it was making my system reboot in the middle of every
other boot.
