If you put that ~x86 in make.conf, what you're doing is converting the 
whole system to x86 unstable rather than x86 stable. Unstable is still 
pretty stable, but it hasn't been tested as much as the stable branch. 
If there are only a few packages that need to be newer than the stable 
branch, list them separately in /etc/portage/package.keywords. 


I am familiar with this, however I wanted bleeding edge. 

"<category>/<package> ~x86" I've had no problems so far mixing stable 
and unstable on my system.

I have some instances where I had no choice but to use the stable package,
e.g. module-init-tools unstable version caused random reboots.
