Well, I'm trying to install Mandriva on my new HDD on the Sony, using the
CD-ROM drive that plugs into the PC Card slot. Starts out fine till I get a
message "No CD-ROM found"....

Duh: what's it getting its stuff from to get to this point if there's no
CD-ROM?

I tried plugging a different external CD-ROM drive into the USB1 slot on the 
computer, but it goes right to Windows (got XP installed "smoothly" in 
"just" 3hrs and 40 minutes--straight install with all critical updates, no 
snafus--just XP, no Office or other apps). I tried changing BIOS to boot 
from "removable device," but that didn't help. It still went right to 
Windows.
