You don't mention the application being used.  In most cases OLE-Stream
apps (M$-Office) don't "update" files, every time they save the file is
removed and rewritten - as far as the OS is concerned the file is
recreated so permissions and ownership are reset.  It is the result of a
stupid design;  this is extremely noticeable when using a network
trashcan.
