Well, a storage server is just a file server, and setting up servers
with Samba so either Win or Linux can access the data is very popular,
so I'd say lots of people have built those.

Yes, Adaptec could handle the RAID or you could let Linux manage it
virtually.

That will work.  Set up RAID via hardware (like Adaptec) or via software
(using Linux).  Install your OS, set up Samba, do your accounts, tweak
XP if necessary and and away you go.

BTW, try to avoid having Windows XP Home Edition in your network.  They
don't do networking permissions well.
