Hello Everyone,
Nik, stop shaking your head. It's ok, really :-) I think I might
have isolated the problem for my printing issues. To recap, I'm using
SUSE 10 on an IBM Thinkpad T30 connected through an IBM port replicator
to a Belkin powered USB hub into which the Brother DCP7020 is connected.
Now ever since I switched to KDE I've been itching to update the lpr and
cups drivers. I did, installing first the lpr driver with Yast. Then the
cups driver from shell because Yast complains it needs lpr which it
shows me but can't seem to recognize itself. Lo and behold when trying
to print a test page from http://localhost:631 I get the same error
message about printer being unavailable!! Now I can't print from any app
again. I uninstall the Brother lpr driver with Yast but leave the cups
driver because Yast tells me it's not installed. Then I uninstall the
Brother cups driver because Yast complains about dependencies. Strange.
Then I delete the the printer from http://localhost:631. I install the
printer again but this time using the Brother Foomatic/hl1250 driver. I
print test pages from localhost and some apps, reboot because I want to
see what happens and repeat test printing. All is once again well in the
world, I think?
This is only included in case anyone else runs into anything like
this. Please note that for MS installations Brother recommends the use
of a powered USB hub if you're going to use one. Also, printing from
Windows prior to Linux was unsuccessfully using a serial cable. Although
I have two USB ports on my laptop there is only one on the docking
station, hence the serial cable attempt prior to Linux. Any further
questions please feel free to contact me.
Here I must give thanks to all the people from the various lists
that have helped me troubleshoot and ultimately fix my problem child.
Thank you to each and every one of you, I have learned a great deal from
you and look forward to learning more.
Peter
