[KLUG Members] Internet speed

I'm having some problem with my internect connection. I have DSL from
Alltel (Windstream). Speed check shows 1040 kbps download and 314 kbps
upload.

I'm using Fedora Core (4, I think; maybe 3).

It takes a large amount of time to do anything. E.g., sending a simple
email from Evolution takes about 30 seconds and connecting to my mail
server takes about 20 seconds when there is no mail. This doesn't happen
when I'm using Windows (same machine). I get turnaround on send/receive
in about 5 seconds and a new email gets sent in 5 seconds.

Similarly with webpages. Going to a new page (no chache involved) such
as www.ucdavis.edu takes about 3 seconds in Windows but 19+ seconds in
Linux (using Firefox in both).

The performance seems to have slowed down considerably when I
disconnected the router and went directly from the computer to the DSL
"modem." I can't see how this would change things, but maybe my box is
still looking for the router each time?

Windstream says their modem has a max MTU of 1464. Ifconfig shows
MTU:1500.
--Maybe I need to change this.
--Where and how do I do that?

Thanks.

EB
