[KLUG Members] Windows calculator v GNOME calculator

I noticed in playing with converting between hex and decimal numbers on
the calculator in Windows that the hex values only work with integers:
If I enter, say, 345.678 as a decimal value and convert to hex, it
rounds, giving a hex integer. And going back from that value to the
decimal shows that the calculator really has lost the values after the
decimal point. Furthermore, the calculator won't let one insert a
decimal point when entering a hex value.

So this made me wonder: does hex math for some reason only allow
integers? It didn't seem likely, and I found nothing by googling that
addressed this. So, I thought, what does Linux do? Opening the
calculator in Ubuntu Gnome I was pleased to find that there are no such
constraints on hex math with that calculator.

Thanks, BillG.
