I agree, that looks like a good start. A good hardware inventory is
independent of OS, though.  I'd do that by looking at the cards and
motherboard in the machine, and checking the BIOS for processor and
memory stats.  Once the machine is up, a "uname -a" and possibly "lsmod"
will give you a kernel revision and how modular the kernel is.
