I would recommend downloading and installing HP's PSP for the model he has.

Install that then there will be a web page that gets you all the 
hardware specific info for the box including serial numbers and part 
numbers. How many slots for memory there are and how many are populated.

These should work on the openSuse stuff too.

You will need your kernel source to install it.
