As Richard mentioned, the correct full name is Avahi, and it's a free
implementation of Apple's Zeroconf. There's a wiki article on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avahi_(software)

According to the page:
Avahi is a free Zeroconf implementation, including a system for
multicast DNS/DNS-SD service discovery. It allows programs to publish
and discover services and hosts running on a local network with no
specific configuration. For example you can plug into a network and
instantly find printers to print to, files to look at and people to talk
to. It is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

Personally, I don't like Zeroconf for a couple of small reasons (like
security), and I really don't like the idea of new installations turning
it on by default. I'm not sure how to disable it in Feisty, but if you
can find some option in your network settings, I would recommend turning
it off. That SHOULD get rid of the alias, too, I would think.
