I have seen this in Caldera and it worked well.  You had a graphical
screen that was part of the control panel in KDE that would allow you
to adjust it (aka M$ Winblows).  It was really nice!!  Wish Red Hat
had something like that.  I think the latest Mandrake had the same
thing.  Now if Mandrake could only make sure that more of their stuff
worked "out of the box" in a new install they would be doing pretty
good.
