FWIW, VMware 4 has all kinds of weird problems with SMP kernels and
UP kernels compiled with the IO-APIC option.

I learned this the hard way while using VMware to test Devil Linux.

I don't know off the top of my head how Redhat compiles their UP kernels.
Might be worth a look.  :-)
