The grumbles are simply aftershocks.  "Early" versions of sendmail had
security problems,  current versions are quite secure.  I recommend
sendmail to anyone looking for an SMTP server without hesitation.

Yep,  so have I.  Tried it once as I had heard the claim "simpler".  To
be blunt it wasn't/isn't,  although you may find you like it better for
some other reason.  Lots of people use it so I am sure it is a good SMTP
server,  as is Postfix.  SMTP servers are naturally complicated beasts,
it is good to just accept that up front.

You will have to do nothing to make all the above true for sendmail
(assuming a recent Linux distribution).

Used by more people than any other SMTP server
Support for "everything"
