By chance, did you have your PCMCIA network card in the PC, and
you were NOT hooked to the network?  If so, either plug in your
network cable, or take out the card.

Oh, I bet something happened if you typed "startx" (no space),
like an error message, which would be helpful to diagnose this.

If the error rolls off the screen, pipe everything to a file:

  startx > errorfile.txt 2>&1

Completely unrelated, happens on all my Redhat systems.
Only a warning, just ignore it.

You can "fix" it by creating some directories to make 
it happy, but I don't remember which ones off hand.
