And what I'm saying is that doing such is _cake_.  All you do is create
a big file and put the inode of that file in the superblock under
"journal."  As such, you can't have _any_ dataloss in
upgrading/downgrading from Ext3.  And it takes about 2 milliseconds to
do either.
