THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (21 active participants tonight)
*****************************************************************
Intro To Web Development - HTTP, HTML, & APACHE Web Server
by Jamie McCarthy

Tonight we enjoyed an overview of web development and
learned a few tricks from an experienced professional.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
=====================
Jamie used a 700 MHz P3 HP laptop running Debian Linux
and the KLUG SVGA projector to take us for a visual tour
of some details. The web is often compared to the 1400's
invention of the Gutenberg printing press (movable type).
Now anyone anywhere can personally publish and deliver
their content on the world wide web to the PC public.

HTTP and HTML relate, but differ. He defined them both
and described their usage. Hyper Text Transport Protocol
(HTTP) is a communication protocol. Apache listens for
this on port 80 by default. HTTP calls for a web page to
the Apache web server results in the transmission of HTML
code to the calling browser. Hyper Text Markup Language
(HTML) is a web page presentation command set. HTML is
what your browser receives, by HTTP, to display a web page
on your PC screen. Jamie reviewed the command set and
usage of HTML v4.01 and displayed v3.x slashcode as a
visual demo. He recommended use of multiple browsers to
review presentations and the importance of HTML validation
tools. We also reviewed SHTML, CGI, META tags and PL
formats and their web usage. We discussed "robots.txt"
which is a file web "crawlers" are supposed to review
before indexing your web site. We saw the format by
looking at Slashdot's robots.txt file. HTML sources:

http://www.wrox.com <<click on HTML in top menu>>

http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html32 <<check out w3.org>>

The Apache web server demonstration was displayed LIVE on
the projection screen and included downloading and
installation of the Apache web server. This server is
already included on most Linux distributions. Get it at:

http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/

Next Jamie compiled the Apache and PERL modules for us
using the make command. He puts his Apache program in
the usr/local/ directory. We explored httpd.conf and
what configuration considerations he recommended. Jamie
did some Apache troubleshooting when a question was asked
about an error message stating "Port 80 is already in use."
Many suggestions were offered to find what was going on.
There was some brief heckling about "webmin" web-based
web site administration. Jamie suggested you look at:

Jamie McCarthy is a writer for Slashdot's "Your Rights Online"
section, and lead programmer at NewsForge.

COME TO A MEETING TO GET THE REALLY GOOD STUFF!!! Y U M M Y!
We had homemade shortbread Christmas cookies and pint cups of
cold fresh milk. A VERY TASTY TREAT!!! Thanks to Dirk Bartley
for sharing these goodies with the group tonight. The treats
were served after the presentation. :)

Linux for Beginners
by Dirk Bartley

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

http://kalamazoolinux.org/meetings/installform.html
Contact the KLUG Installmasters for more information:
installmaster@kalamazoolinux.org

IMPORTANT TO SEE URL: http://kalamazoolinux.org/bsware

Now is the time to get started! Linux is becoming a mainstay
of free software, free choice, dependability and power.

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

Dirk graduated in 1991 from Western Michigan University
with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He is currently
employed as a Systems Administrator at Schupan Aluminum
Sales. There he administers the corporate network using
a system running Red Hat Linux. In his spare time Dirk
enjoys playing hockey, taking his dog a walk, using Linux
and learning about how software can be used to benefit
people.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE STATUS - STILL WAITING FOR THE IRS!!!
The 501c3 application was sent to the IRS in December 1999.
We had an appeal hearing with our lawyer and an IRS agent.
We are told to expect a decision before October 2001!!!
{Note:  It is December!!!  What is the IRS's reason NOW?}
------------------------------------------------------------
The IRS has a better idea of what the organization is about.
We hope to hear from them REAL SOON with notice of our
charitable deductibility. Charitable and tax-exemption
status is routinely granted to educational not-for-profit
organizations. This should help us attain our financial
goals. We need working capital for increased Linux promotional
activities.

This successful public demonstration of the flexibility and
suitability of Linux in a commercial environment provides
great exposure. This project provides a share of the profits
to fund KLUG activities. Members check on this LAN, remotely,
several times a day. The network support for Boogie's is being
supplemented by Peter Buxton. Robert G. Brown is supervising
the overall operation, remotely at times. The Linux OS STILL
remains cool, calm, and constant! Running Squid, NFS, sendmail,
and the Apache web server local now to host the Boogie's web site!
The web server is up. A game testing machine has been
configured. Various upgrades and enhancements are being applied
currently, including a replacement (233 MHz Pentium Pro) CPU
installed on the main server. Contact "Robert G. Brown"
