Are you sure the encode program configured actually exists?
Can you try and encode a file manually based upon what is in the config
panel and see if maybe the encoder program is dying for some reason.

This plus the previous problem make me think you have a lame version of
lame :) or maybe no lame at all. I had this once.
On a related note - How does one deal with the security of CD ripping?
cdrecord needs to be root to scan the generic SCSI devices? You could
setuid cdrecord (or run it via ksu, Kerberos) but then a user potentially
has access to ANY SCSI device. My mind fills with horrific visions of ISO
images laid down on top of /usr.... Or do you just change the permission
on the specific device file and somehow tell cdrecord that that device is
the default (globally)?
