ESD? You're going to have to be a little more explicit. I get /dev/audio:
No such device.
I have

append="cs4232=0x534,5,0,3,0x330,9"
in lilo.conf,

14 sound       shows in /proc/devices
appears in /proc/devices
When I do dmesg I get:

cs4232 set synthio and synthirq to use the wavefron facilities.
olp3sa: dma, irq and io must be set.

/proc/isapnp shows that it's there, but I don't know how to set things.
Where must the append in lilo.conf go? I'm still unsure, and the
instructions I find on the net aren't the best in the world.

Adam
