2940 is more expensive...
2940 operates under a faster speed: 2930CU (which I have) Has a 20 MB/sec
max transfer rate, and is fast (ultra?) SCSI. No wide. 2940UW(Ultra-wide)
operates at 40 MB/sec. 2940 U2W is Ultra-wide SCSI 2: 80 MB/sec. Nice
card. But the U2W is expensive as all get out. However, if you happen to
have Ultra wide scsi 2 drives (I had drives that had 80 pin connectors, for
a RAID backplane) you will be able to push them at full speed. Even at 40
MB/sec (I had a SIIG AP-40) The drives I had really cooked. Win2k pro
started in a flash with those fast drives. Oh, I think the AP40 has a 133
MB/sec bus transfer rate, too. As well, the AP40 and teh Adaptec 2940
series have BIOSes, like the 2930, so you can boot drives off of them.
Pretty slick. If I had the cash, I'd go only SCSI. My SCSI cdrom drive
(plextor 12-20) reads data faster than my Creative IDE 52x. (For audio
ripping: 20x versus the Creative's 7x).
Word to the wise: Like mobos, SCSI cards are not to be scrimped on. I
have, in my possesion, 4 (four) Ultra wide scsi 2 drives that are fried
because of a bad SCSI card (it's the only thing that I figured could fry 3
drives simultaneously, then another as soon as I connected it). Spend the
extra cash and go adaptec. Please. I lost three barracudas (9,9, and 2 GB,
respectively) and a 9 GB Compaq (actually fujitsu) that I loved and I have
no way of getting them back...
My 2 cents.

Best Buy and such only sell the 2930, which is Ultra- Narrow for $99.00.
I've never seen a Wide card for in the retail channel for anything close to
that. For what it's worth, anybody know the difference between the 2930 and
the 2940 series?
