Ok, that should be the same as gmc (AFAIK).

I have no idea how KDE installs,  so I'm flying blind here.

First, RPMs is a bad example.  You can't install one without being root, and the
gnome-vfs should take over the browsing of tar.gz, rpm, etc... files and let you
move around inside them as if they were just subdirectories,  copy files out
etc....  (It doesn't appear that you can copy a file in, at least to an RPM
package).  If I right click on an RPM in gmc I get the options to Upgrade,
Install, Show Info, Check Signature, etc...  most of which lead to a "You must
be superuser" dialog box.

As for other file types (rtf, mpeg, etc...) GNOME seems to determine for itself
if it should open a terminal window or not.  You don't set that up in the MIME
bindings.
