Hi Wes,

You don't need to run a proxy server, though you could if you wanted to. Jamie is right, they run everything through squid. The Charter DNS servers I have from DHCP at home are 24.213.28.39 and 24.213.28.40. FWIW.

True story: I asked the guy that "installed" my cable modem if I would have any trouble using it with Linux. His reply? "Linux?...is that a brand of computer?" Nevermind, I thought, do your damage and leave the rest to me. :)

Except for one weekend when their cache did not update all weekend (verified by multiple connections and a chat with someone at their network ops on Monday...not the inepts at tech support), I've had a great experience with it. I SSH from work into my box at home, though I'm not running any web services.

Tony

Hey all. I just signed up for charter pipeline service in Holland, MI. Is
anybody else using this in that area?

I was just told by a "technical" person (who couldn't even give me the IP
addresses of their DNS servers) that I would have to set up a proxy server for
all my web stuff.

Is that true?

I have finally given up on finding a DSL provider in the area, so I guess I'm
stuck... for now...
