You sure it is a Promise controller?  If so, then Promise is now
(finally) producing driver disks for RedHat.  Newer kernels are starting
to include some of drivers for the newer Promise chips as well.

Getting the "trick BIOS" RAID to work is a different story, but the base
ATA functionality works fine as long as the driver exists.
