I have a gateway solo also, and i ran into this problem when i tried to
install RedHat 7.1 too.  For some reason configure x at the install.  I
tried every kind of configuration possible.. Went through the whole list..
then i gave up. then the next day i tried again, and it worked right from
the start.. odd.

The same happened when i tried to do a clean install of 7.2.  the install
program didn't recognize the monitor (or flat screen as it is), so i had to
choose a generic one (with an crazy high resolution) and that worked as
well..
sometimes it helps to take a step back and try again... especially with
gateway products! :)
