To add my anecdotal two cents to the pile: I had AT&T @Home service this
summer, and hostname authentication was mandatory.  It took a while to
figure that out; I wish @Home, even though they don't officially support
real operating systems, would have put up a Linux page somewhere
explaining that hostnames were necessary.

In any event, I've never used dhclient, and I hate pump (it's lacking in
features and has a useless name), but I am a big fan of dhcpcd.  Comes by
default with Slackware (the distro everyone should be using), and allows
you to specify your assigned hostname with the '-h' flag while allowing
you to leave your "real" hostname set to anything you jolly well please.
