[KLUG Members] Savage4 Pro video card?

Has anyone gotten 3D acceleration working with a video card based on the
Savage4 Pro chipset (e.g. the Diamond Stealth III S540)?

I'm happily playing UT and Q3A with my nVidia card, and my roommate is
good to go with his ATI board, but we're not having much luck with the
S540 of our other roommate (who we're trying to Linuxise).

I found drivers for the chipset ("savage"), installed them, and got
XFree86 to recognize them okay, but Q3A dumps out with an OpenGL error,
and UT has obvious GL-related problems.

Do I need Mesa?  Or something else?  Or what?  I really love Linux, but I
*hate* XFree...
