Been there, felt that way.

In /etc/pam.d perhaps?  Do you get any messages in /var/log/messages or
/var/log/secure when you try to login as a user?  Try tossing the debug option
onto the pam_pwdb/pam_unix lines of the /etc/pam.d/login  and
/etc/pam.d/system-auth files.
