I think all the ranting about the insecurity of 802.11 is half baked.  802.3
certainly isn't secure,  the Internet is not secure, token ring is not secure,
ppp is not secure.  It just isn't the job of that layer to be secure.  Do you
send sensitive information over the wire in clear text?  No.  Then why would
anyone think to send it over the air in clear text?  If your app doesn't support
any type of encryption then establish a VPN connection for crying out loud. 
Whether you sniff my SSH packets off the wire or snatch them from the air,  I
don't care,  because my app which needs security has designed it in.  But why
add the overhead of encryption to my ftp connection pulling down
linux-4.6.53-ac99.tar.bz3?  I'm missing something here  

(BTW,  clear text broadcast might even be USEFUL in some cases... imagine a poor
mans wireless "multicast").
