>First off, I don't have a Duel PPro system. (always wanted one) One of

I have an ALR 6x6. Performance is very very good, but the MTBF on system
components is terrible. And Gateway bought ALR. So some pimply little
tech-support freak asked me if I tried booting my $20,000 box from a
floppy when none of the lights on the display would come on........

Gateway should be lashed to the side of a mountain with vultures gnawing
on it's liver for the rest of eternity.

As for tech companies, I despise them even more than good old M$.

The largest assembly of morons that humanity has every managed to gather
under one root. A real accomplishment, I mean they have pretty stiff
competition with organizations like Ameritech vying for that prize.

>>>I wouldn't spend much money for anything that old, especially with

> Word is from Tom's hardware guide that you can buy a Athalon MP
>motherboard (Duel cpu) and use Duron processors on them. Of course it's not
>officially supported but reported to work VERY well. I'm looking into this

Any word on when official support will happen?

>option myself. (HOME use, NOT office)

Yep, keep the AMDs at home.

>>>P.S. Should I guy a special power supply for it? Right now it's
>>>probably got a 250 in it.
>From personal experience. If your going to have a loaded system, use a
>300 watt power supply. This way, you don't have the worries. When you have a
>loaded multimedia system (CD-ROM / CD-RW, 2hd's, etc) and only a 250w power
>supply, then PS lifetime seems to be really short (2 years) compared to when
>I used 300+ supplies.

Not to mention spurious lock-ups, potentially damaged hardware, etc...

With enclosures availabel on E-bay (some with dual PS) real cheap I
strongly recommend SCSI equipment in external cabinets. Much greater
expandability, less heat in the case, etc... Let the computers PS power
the computer, and the drive cabinet's PS power the drivers, and the tape
drive's PS power the tape drive, etc....
