I did this once.

Are you sure you updated everything related to XFree and fonts and stuff?  If
you get mismatched version it can have strange results.

Also, be sure to restart your X server just in case.  (at the graphical login
screen hitting CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE will restart the X server).
