Has anybody had a system get stock on hwclock while booting?

If so, how can one fix this?

It's an Athlon on an Asus A7V motherboard.  The current system is RedHat 7.2. 
RedHat 6.2 boots find...

The system doesn't lock up solid.  If I go into Single user mode I can ctrl-C to
get to a prompt.  If I type hwclock it doesn't respond...

any ideas?!
