A _lot_ of logic, let alone various defaults, have changed from 1.9 to
2.0 and even more from 2.0 to 2.2.  The best suggestion I can give you
is to create a new smb.conf "clean," create a few "example" shares, so
you can see the various changes, then integrate in all your old shares. 

In 2.0/2.2, there are various settings for how "guest" gets mapped. 
Trial and error is the best way to learn them, or read the extra
documentation outside of the smb.conf man page.
