I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (29 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Timber!!! [Linux Log Files]
By Adam Williams

One of the most useful tools in securing and troubleshooting a
UNIX/Linux system are the logs. Tonight, we covered how syslog,
the messaging daemon, manages your log messages and how to create
automated responses to specific messages. We also covered the
log files of common applications such as Samba and HTTP, as well
as the dmesg function.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Adam's detailed presentation is posted in .pdf format at:
http://kalamazoolinux.org/presentations
-----------------------------------------------------------

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
***********************
Adam used the KLUG InFocus SVGA projector and a laptop
empowered with the Linux OS to show us the importance
of logs in Linux. We learned about the Kernel Ring
Buffer and the dmesg command. klogd daemon and sysogd
configuration in /etc/syslogd.conf were reviewed. We
saw how to start these processes with scripts. Adam
displayed the log message format and we learned about
facilities, levels, and action descriptors.

Next we looked at log maintenance with the logger command
and the logrotate command found in /etc/logrotate.conf.
Cisco routers can generate log messages. Also, the XINETD
(superserver) supports logging to syslog. We looked at a
log tool / GUI utility called GNOME logview. wtmp &
sessreg were explained and then we learned about the
lastlog command. Adam ended his presentation with logging
and performance issues. Logs are necessary to monitor the
functions and problems of various processes. Usually the
log can tell you what caused a failure and direct you to
the solution.

We had question and answers for a few minutes and then
the unruly group of digital thugs broke into spontaneous
anarchy and guttural shouting. Everyone was smiling!!!

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the
network he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of
hundred workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems.
Not only does he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also
the owner of the domain "whitemice.org". Adam has been a regular
contributor to technical discussions on our main mailing list,
both presenting and solving some of the most challenging
networking and configuration problems.

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 08/20/2002

SAMBA: Integrating Win32 and LINUX/UNIX

The Samba software suite is a collection of programs that
implements the SMB protocol for unix systems, allowing you to
serve files and printers to Windows, NT, OS/2 and DOS
clients. This protocol is sometimes also referred to as the
LanManager or Netbios protocol. Author: Andrew Tridgell

IV. GENERAL KLUG ANNOUNCEMENTS

WHAT IS KLUG? -
KLUG is a volunteer group formed by and for LINUX
system users in the Kalamazoo Michigan area. We
support, promote, and develop activities related
to the use, study, and application of LINUX in the
local community.

THE BEGINNER'S MEETINGS ARE HELD the first Tuesday of each
month. Linux basics and distribution installs are the
lessons of these evenings. If you do want KLUG's FREE help
installing Linux on your computer at one of these meetings,

Note:
As Linux matures as an OS, the educational needs are evolving.
The Beginner's Meeting format is changing with those needs.
It is difficult to cover all the basics in one meeting. Linux
is not just for CS experts and IT professionals. The "BASICS"
meetings are intended for those with limited experience with
Operating System's or even Personal Computer's. Your comments
and questions are welcomed!

IF YOU KNOW OF ADDITIONAL LINKS that should be included
