First fix my typo..

   Someone who knows more about the innards on Linux can probably provide a
better technical answer then I can but the short answer is, when you mount
over a live directory (one with files in it) Linux simply "reroutes" that
mount to the location you have specified and "replaces it" when you umount
it. The origional files are there, just not assesible AFAIK. Yes, I've made
the same mistake in the past and it is quite scary when your not expecting
it to happen.
