The power supply is the _last_thing_ you should be dorking with and
running out-of-spec on a system. It's the unit that provides power, and
can bring down your house if you go violating its UL Listed operation
mode. [ You do have a UL Listed PS, don't you? ;-> ]
With that said, using older hardware with smaller power supplies,
minimal active cooling / low-db components. I have several LPX and NLX
Pentium systems like this, and upgrading the memory is usually
sufficient to even have a solid, stateful Linux 2.4 firewall.
Lastly, locating a firewall into a closet or remote location solves the
issue with sound. Especially if it does not require much ventilation.
I guess to end this thread, I have no problem with what the other
gentleman does for himself. I just have a problem with the fact that he
is projecting false security based on flawed logic and endless excuses.=20
Which is where my "technical accuracy" kicks in and often nips people in
the butt. Use what you want, balance your security needs versus effort,
but don't poor-excuse your way into thinking it's more secure.=20
