I. PRESENTATION RECAP
THIS WEEK'S KLUG PRESENTATION: (16 active KLUG participants)
*****************************************************************
Debian Install And Package Management Demo
by Peter Buxton

Peter demonstrated the installation process and the
package management technology provided with the Debian
distribution of Linux.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
*************************
Peter used an HP P3/500 MHz desktop running the Debian
Linux OS and the KLUG SVGA projector to show us how
Debian handles installs and package management funtions.
It does not use the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) method.
Using Knoppix v3.1 (Debian on a CD-ROM) with the KDE v3.0
Konsole terminal window application, Peter showed us the
file structure formats and how OS packages are updated.
He did a great job of showing us how Debian operates.

Peter called Knoppix the ultimate rescue disk. Rebuild
your system and play Free Cell at the same time. We saw a
demonstration of how you can use Debian to set up RAID level
0 hard drives using fdisk and vg. Peter succesfully got
the drives configured, with an assist from Adam Williams.
The question and answer session included several questions
about the features that Debian supports. LVM, RAID, LDAP,
and many other features. Debian GNU/Linux provides more
than a pure OS. It comes with more than 8710 packages,
precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy
installation on your machine.

Peter Buxton has been messing with computers since middle
school but has stubbornly refused to learn programming
until recently. He learned to manually configure sendmail.cf
and ppp command lines while he used, as few others did, OS/2
on his desktop. This personal quirk proved a valuable asset
when he switched to Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 in 1999, as
linux.net.support is a vital resource

     NOTE -
* Must come to three meetings to qualify as a full member.

II. NEXT KLUG MEETING - TUESDAY 12/17/2002
******************************************************************
The Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP)
by Richard Zimmerman

Linux makes a great platform for deploying diskless
workstations that boot from a network server. The
LTSP is all about running thin client computers in
a GNU/Linux environment.

Richard Zimmerman is the Information Systems guru for K&B
Transport in Elkhart, Indiana. Between his duties of
programming, network admin, PC support & many other tasks
for several offices, he still finds time to continue his
learning experiences with Linux!

THE KLUG FTP SERVER HAS BEEN UPDATED AND MOVED TO THE
Chamber of Commerce. Work is also being done with the
KLUG Driftwood Project hardware. We have a Lexmark
laser and an Epson injet printer now that was donated
by Bruce Smith. We are still in need of more hardware
contributions. If you know of available hardware...
looking especially for PC's (minimum Pentium 1) and
working SVGA monitors. THANKS FOR THE HELP BRUCE!
