Well, I found out why my system hung when I upgraded the kernel. It was
not that the kernel had changed (I knew I hadn't changed that many
parameteres), it was that, while drive swapping, I removed the floppy
drive from the BIOS! It doesn't seem to have anything to do with whether
or not it's hooked up, or whether the BIOS expects to boot from it, but
only that the BIOS must have a floppy drive configured for the system to
"look at."

Hmm. Time to try that Alt-SysRq magic key to see where the kernel is
hanging.
