For Mysql: How are you starting the daemon?  Did you start it at all?  I 
have to do somehting like this to get mine to start:	
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld --skip-name-resolve    
and then it runs fine.  I can't start it without the name resolve, it 
fails.
