I've been down this road. The above trick work for me on an "integrated" video card.

It is usually best.

Do a uname -a and you should be able to tell what kernel you are running.

Someone else said that that fix was including in 2.4.17-rc4,  and 2.4.18 is
actually based on 2.4.17-rc3.  There was quite a thread about the potential
confusion this could create.  The "nopentium" thing got mentioned a few times, 
so it might be worth double checking before grabbing 2.4.18
