My anecdotal story...  Two years ago, I registered four domains at
joker.com for $10/yr. Last month, I transferred them to register.com
at $35/yr.  I'll soon be moving all my domains to register.com.

The kicker for me was when centralinfo.net went from free to a pay
site.  I don't want to run my own DNS;  it's hard.  The more
expensive registrar gives me free DNS so I don't have to deal with
two different sites, and worrying about sites going offline, and
other such things.

The other kicker was when I paid for a domain I needed from a
domain-name "cybersquatter" and realized that some of these domains
were much more valuable to me than the $35/yr or whatever.  Right
now I'm paying $50/yr for mccarthy.vg but its value to me is much
greater.
