While Windows 9x relies on the BIOS fixed disk ID to figure out its
drive order (and changing it _does_ screw it up), both NT/2000/XP and
Linux have to map BIOS ID to actual device.  If you go changing either,
you can [destructively] wreak havoc with NT/2000/XP and can prevent
Linux from booting (although you can always use a bootdisk and fix the
LILO entries).

I find life is easier if I don't touch the BIOS and use the
MBR/bootloader to do anything "fancy."
