The first potential problem is that you are running on
a laptop. Often laptop vendors will make changes to
the basic video chipset to reduce heat or power
consumption or get it to work with the panel display
etc. Often these changes come at the expense of
compatability, escpecially with Linux.

Secondly you need a video chipset with 3d acceleration
for Tux Racer. I am not completely sure which ATI
chip set that is but it sounds similar to what I am
currently (and soon to be removed) running. I have
the ATI All-in-wonder pro. This card has the ATI Rage
chipset. It has 3d acceleration but the 3d
acceleration is not supported under the Xwindow
implementation in RedHat 7.2. I had run it previously
when I was running either 7.0 or 7.1 (cannot remember
which). There is not going to be any support at this
time for the Rage with the newer Xwindows code. The
Rage Pro has support under the newer Xwindows software
but in the laptop you are not going to be able to
upgrade that. I would recommend moving back to 7.0 or
at least moving the Xwindows code back. If you back
rev the Xwindows code though you may find other things
not working.

I guess if you want good gaming you should move to a
desktop where you can be more selective about the
video hardware.

I was really bummed about my ATI All-in-wonder pro but
I guess I have had it long enough. I am now looking
for a 3d accelerated card that will support video in
and out as well so that I can once again play games
like tux racer. I looked a little at the Hauppage
cards but not sure if they will work with Linux. I
may have to use two different machines, one for video
editing and one for 3d games but I would rather not.

Good luck with the laptop.
