But its never sanctioned by a corporate entity. And other sites have
done the same tracking.

Such was the case with SunBelt Software's (one of the major, on-line 3rd
party NT/2000/XP software resellers) "The Truth About Linux" survey a
few years back. After about some 6,000 votes, /. got ahold of it. So
the number of vote went through the roof, with about 30-40% coming from
non-Windows-based web browsers!

So what did SunBelt do? They only looked at the first 2,000 votes,
which was from almost entirely Windows-based web browsers (over 99%).
Still, Linux evaluation and adoption rates were well over 75% at their
own customer's sites, and SunBelt's own list mantainer, "Stu," said "he
was humbled" by the results.
