Linux installation is going to go more smoothly if you can do the
install on the actual computer you're going to use it on.  (Heck,
Windows XP wouldn't even let you switch hard drives like that --
anyone whose machine changes that radically must be a software
pirate!  :)

If this is possible, I'd suggest next time swapping the CD drive
instead of the hard drive.  I don't know what the "system error"
you were getting was, but maybe your CD just couldn't be read by
that one CD-ROM.
