Chad,

I have used VMWare on Windows for awhile now. Originally on NT4 and now on
2000. Bruce is correct in that the virtual disk is not your actual physical
disk, but a file created by VMWare. All you have to do is install the OS as
you would without VMWare, which is Linux in your situation. Using VMWare
saved me the cost of additional hardware and allowed me to learn about
Linux, networking different OS's, and it also works great for development.
The virtual disks can be configured in three different modes: persistent,
undoable, and nonpersistent
(http://www.vmware.com/support/ws3/doc/ws30_disks2.html#1019319). I use the
undoable disk option when experimenting with different software or packages.
VMWare will prompt you to save any changes to a "session" when you shut down
the virtual OS. So, if you don't like the software or changes you made
while using the virtual machine OS, then don't save the session.

I also use VMWare at work on Linux because my employers e-mail is through
exchange, but I like to use Linux as my desktop. VMWare allows me to
install Windows and run Outlook without having to dual-boot. Remember to
consider the hardware requirements of all your operating systems that you
will run on your computer. All of them must share that hardware, so don't
skimp on processor speed and RAM. Also, consider saving your virtual disks
to another computer for backup and quick restore, or sharing. :-)

While I'm on my rant about VMWare (can you tell I like this software?),
check out Netware 6 in a virtual machine. Here's a couple cool links on the
subject:

I'm biting the bullet and trying VMWare on my Win2K laptop. Last night I
downloaded the trial 3.0 version and got to the point of installing Red Hat
7.2 in my virtual machine. I got kind of nervous when it talked about
partitioning and using grub or lilo. I'm not too familiar with what it's
doing here and the manual makes no reference what to do regarding the boot
partition or grub or lilo. Anybody out there know? The only reference the
manual makes is "Allow automatic partioning of the disk to occur in the
Automatic Partioning screen".

tia,

Chad
