I'm building a system with a "standard Gnome desktop" this weekend
based on RedHat 7.2 + Ximian. From that config, I'm going to clone
to (7) other systems, which will be rolled out for a SmithConcepts,
Inc. client next weekend.
- ABIWORD AND GNUMERIC VERSIONS
I know Ximian is hard at work on Gnome 2 developments. But they've
been ignoring a lot of the Gnome 1 developments in their packaging
endeavors. I see they've finally pushed out an updated Mozilla and
Mozilla-based components (e.g., Nautilus, Galeon, etc...) just a
couple of days ago. But it seems they haven't updated AbiWord nor
Gnumeric since late October. Both are "stuck" at versions 0.94 and
0.71 respectively**, but since then AbiWord has become a "release
cannidate" at 0.99.x and, more importantly, Gnumeric, which is now
"stable'n lean" at version 1.0.
[ **Note: I checked the Duke LUG, PlanetMirror and RPMFind.NET
mirrors, which were good through the 23rd. Ximian.COM is too busy
to find out if they've released more packages over the last 2-3 days
-- I'm hoping this is why. ]
So, assuming Ximian hasn't updated those two packages in the last 48
hours, where is the best place to get the latest AbiWord and
Evolution?
- STAR/OPENOFFICE RECOMMENDATION
Which leaves the possibility of installing a Star/OpenOffice suite
as well.
I might end up installing StarOffice 5.2 anyway, because they have a
pair of Windows systems with it. I also have the 6.0 beta, but it
will expire sooner or later, so I don't want to do it. I know 6.0
was based on OpenOffice Build 638C and I now see they now have Build
641C out (dated 12/20). But I read the release notes and OpenWriter
641C has an issue with RTF support on Linux -- or does that not
affect DOC support (I'm downloading now to verify).
