Shot in the dark here, but try checking your /etc/lilo.conf
and see precisely what kernel it is looking for. For
 instance, 2.4.18-5 or 2.4.somethingelse? Update
accordingly if needed. Also, if you don't have the ramdisk
file (initrd.soemthing.or.other), comment it out. If you
update /etc/lilo.conf, remember to run lilo afterwards.

I had a similar problem recently with network drivers and
this resolved it. Did you install the kernel from rpm, or
 compile it yourself?

HTH.

I can log in.

I'm using LILO.

Tried the Xconfigurator and no changes to the video setting
 seems to help.
The machine worked fine with 7.1, so it can't be
 incompatible. I've upgraded
memory and HD.

  With GRUB I think
