Hmmm, no it was a clean install.

I replaced the video card and reset everything to bare minimum (640x480)
and after a long delay it returned and said "there was a problem with
your x configuration".  That was progress.  Before it would just go
blank and stay that way.

So, I've got -really- big fonts but I can startx and see things.  We'll
see where we can go from here.
