GNOME apps in non-GNOME environments can take awhile to start. If you
already have a GNOME application running, the `next' GNOME application
you start should be pretty quick.

If I log into GNOME I start gconf and oaf, load a bunch of libraries,
and initialize a good dozen or so IORs. Since all this is done things
like Galeon start almost instantly. If an app tries to start and all
these things aren't available a cascade of dependency initializations
occurs.

You can put "galeon -s" in your session startup script (don't know how
that works under KDE) and galeon will startup silently (no UI) when you
log in, causing the chain to be built. Then GNOME apps (and Galeon)
should start much more quickly.
