My first advice is to stop over at dslreports.com and there you can find a
lot of answers to all things DSL, plenty of Linux information too.

You have two options on the dialup because Ameritech uses PPPoE protocol:

1) Buy a router that supports PPPoE (I like my Linksys BEFSR41 for this
purpose) and then Linux will see the router just like any other LAN
connection, the router will handle the PPPoE protocol work or,

2) You need to get Roaring Penguin to support PPPoE on Linux. I'm not the go
to person for the latest in kernel developments but I was of the
understanding they were going to build PPPoE support into the kernel (using
Roaring Penguin's work I assume) but I'm not sure if that's done. I know
that Mandrake has PPPoE support built in their install but I can't help you
on RH. If you go to DSLReports though they have the links there where you
can get Roaring Penguin for yourself.
